About

Hello!

“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.”

My name is Paul Smith, and I have been a professional hypnotherapist since 2000. Currently, I am registered as a Senior Fellow Practitioner on the Accredited Counsellors, Coaches, Psychotherapists, and Hypnotherapists (ACCPH) Register. I have personally helped hundreds of people from all over the United Kingdom since launching a private practice in Scotland.

Being a hypnotherapist is remarkable. Most clients are new to the subject and often underestimate how quickly hypnosis can help them. Whenever possible, I resolve their problem in just one session, which never fails to amaze people, especially if they have been struggling with the issue for many years. While some challenges may take longer to overcome, the first step is to start!

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis as a tool to help individuals achieve a heightened state of focus and concentration, often referred to as a trance. During this trance-like state, individuals may become more open to suggestions and able to explore thoughts, memories, and emotions that might not be as accessible in their normal waking state.

Key Components of Hypnotherapy:

  • Hypnosis: A natural state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, often induced by a trained therapist through relaxation techniques, verbal repetition, and guided imagery.
  • Therapeutic Goals: Hypnotherapy is typically used to address specific issues, such as:
    • Managing pain
    • Reducing stress or anxiety
    • Overcoming phobias
    • Breaking habits, such as smoking or overeating
    • Improving sleep
    • Enhancing self-confidence
    • Managing chronic conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Process: The hypnotherapist guides the client into a deeply relaxed state and then offers therapeutic suggestions designed to help the client make positive changes. These suggestions might focus on changing behaviours, altering perceptions, or addressing subconscious thoughts.
  • Types of Hypnotherapy:
    • Suggestion Therapy: Uses suggestions to influence behaviour or thought patterns. It’s commonly used for habit-breaking, such as smoking cessation or weight loss.
    • Analytical Hypnotherapy: Focuses on uncovering and addressing underlying psychological issues, often by exploring past experiences or traumas.
  • Self-Hypnosis: In some cases, hypnotherapists may teach clients techniques to perform self-hypnosis, allowing them to apply therapeutic suggestions on their own.

How Hypnotherapy Works:

Hypnotherapy leverages the power of the subconscious mind. During hypnosis, the conscious mind becomes less active, making the subconscious mind more receptive to positive suggestions. This can enable individuals to reframe their thoughts, change behaviours, or gain insights into emotional issues.

Efficacy and Considerations:

  • Efficacy: The effectiveness of hypnotherapy can vary depending on the individual and the issue being addressed. While some people may experience significant benefits, others may find it less effective.
  • Professional Guidance: It’s important to seek hypnotherapy from a qualified and licensed practitioner. Misuse or unprofessional practices could lead to ineffective or even harmful outcomes.
  • Complementary Therapy: Hypnotherapy is often used in conjunction with other forms of treatment, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) or medical treatment, rather than as a standalone solution.

Overall, hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool for personal change and healing when used appropriately and under the guidance of a trained professional.

I’m extremely pleased with the results of our sessions. It’s been challenging to find an effective method for pain relief at my age, but the approach we’ve been using has really made a difference.
